"Great for anyone looking to sharpen their qualitative research skills. The lessons were thorough and a lot of useful tips were shared. I particularly liked the Q&A."
Arna Lim, Manila, Philippines
"I would highly recommend this series to anyone looking to fill in the gaps of their understanding of qualitative research. This course gave me confidence, structure, and further clarity to how I initiate, build, execute, and report my research. I especially loved the mix of instruction and hands-on activities. The activities truly brought the teaching to life in a way that mimicked a true research study."
Beth Elliott, Ecolab, St. Paul, USA
"I have been to NN/g trainings before (even before the pandemic, in-person with dozens of people in a room :O ) but this was my first "series". I think the format was awesome for someone who is ready to take the next step into mastering their craft. The five days were full of immensely valuable content with tons of tips and tricks from real life situations that you can't find anywhere else. And I was positively surprised with how much hands-on experience it included. Working with the same team for 5 days was in itself an experience."
Berk Sarper Senol, Istanbul, Turkey
"I would highly recommend this series to people interested in UX research, those new to the field, as well as UX researchers with experience. I benefitted in some new learnings myself. I liked that the series was one complete package which allowed us time to dive deeper into different subjects. There was nothing that I disliked about this series, and believe me, I would let you know if there was something :) "
Matt Sharayko, Pennsylvania, USA
"This series was amazing. I learned a lot and I feel like I now have an overview of qualitative research and what the possibilities are. It was great that there was a lot of information and examples, the material was very well spaced and mixed in with hands on activities. I also appreciate that we received the course slides and additional documents."
Ioana Dorofteiu, London, UK
"I would 100% recommend this course to anyone considering it. I'm self taught, and have been busting it to try to learn as much as I can. I learned SO MUCH new material from this course. I also loved all the real world examples and experience we got to have. It was amazing how much content was packed into a week, but yet it wasn't overwhelming. The days FLEW by."
Kristen, Vermont, USA
"I'm already suggesting it to my colleagues in the company -- even to people outside of the design domain. I tell them how the structure and the way the exercises were thought of is really, really good. Also, lovely Maria and Kate are really good speakers with a lot of practical experience to back up their presentations. The presentation itself and all of the resources that we got are awesome, and really well made."
Tadej Bolcevic, Superology, Zagreb, Croatia

"Kate and Maria were amazing. Highly recommend this to anyone new in the UX research field or professionals who are looking to do a refresher. Relevant, direct, and useful case studies shared with video examples conducted by the speakers, which really help with their credibility as experts in the field "
Emily Yang, Singapore
"I would highly recommend Nielsen Norman Group as a training provider. Kate and Maria were really engaging course leaders (and being an ex-teacher, I can be quite critical of trainers!) So personable and helpful. Great pace and variety in tasks and activities. I'm really impressed with the quality and quantity of resources provided. The timings worked well, as I could do it after my working hours. I thought I would be tired, but the course has been so engaging, it hasn't been a problem."
Steph, UK
"I would highly encourage those interested to enroll, this is the best training I've had in many years. I had a lot of ah-ha moments. Love the delivery as both Kate and Maria really knew the content and have done this work -- it clearly showed"
Katherine Smith, Laguna Niguel, USA
"Do it. It was an excellent way to focus on a specific type of UX -- research -- that worked with my schedule (virtual, partial day). Within a single series, we covered a LOT of material efficiently."
David Felfoldi, SHERPA Global, USA
"I was only disappointed that it flew by. I was fully engaged and it was really a great course. The content was relevant to today's modern transformation of product, problem, and solution discovery. I highly recommend it."

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who should take the Qualitative Research Series?
This series is ideal for new practitioners looking to start or improve their UX research studies. However, experienced researchers who want to reaffirm and certify their existing knowledge, while learning new tips and tricks, will also benefit from this series.
Q: Can I take the Qualitative Research Series if I don’t want to participate in activities?
No. This format is not ideal for anyone uninterested in participating in hands-on activities in a remote format. Each day of the series will include hands-on exercises building on the work done the day before. Every attendee should arrive prepared to do focused, intense activities in a small group. Participation in the hands-on activities is required.
Q: How does this differ from NN/g’s UX Conference?
While both formats offer hands-on learning from UX experts, Series events differ from the UX Conference in the following ways:
Series | UX Conference |
---|---|
Provides a streamlined content track, presenting concepts in a prescribed order over a longer period of time | Allows for more flexibility: One-day courses can be taken in any order, over any period of time |
Deeper networking with the same small group of UX learners over 5 days | Because courses are à la carte, each day has a different group of attendees |
No redundant content or repeated intro-level recaps, leaving more time for practicing applying the knowledge you learn |
Because each course has a different group of attendees, instructors can’t assume everyone has the same background knowledge on the topic. As a result, more time is spent in covering foundational concepts. |
A single exam, worth 3 certification credits in one speciality (5 credits are required to earn UX certification, so the series gives you a big head start) | Each course has a different exam, and is worth one credit each |
Each series is led by two instructors, ensuring more instructor-participant time | Each course is led by one instructor |
Q: What do I need to take part?
- Stable high-speed internet connection, to stream audio and video to your computer
- Speakers, a microphone, and a webcam (strongly recommended)
- A computer that does not have a strict firewall that blocks collaboration tools such as Google Docs
- Zoom's meeting software (which is free to download and install), or Chrome browser
Q: Will I be UX Certified after taking this series?
After you complete the series, you'll have the opportunity to take an exam (at no extra charge.) If you pass the exam, you'll earn 3 credits towards a UX Certification in the UX Research specialization.
To become UX Certified, you'll only need 2 additional credits. We recommend the following courses, which would be a good complement to the Qualitative Research Series.
Q: How much interaction with the instructors will I have?
The series content is 100% live, with virtual face-to-face interaction. The series features two instructors, who will both be available during and after class time (in office hours) for questions. You'll have the opportunity to receive feedback on your activities from these instructors.
Q: How will the virtual class sessions work?
Meetings will take place using the videoconferencing service Zoom, collaboration tools (such as group document editing and whiteboarding tools), and social discussion platform Slack. You'll also be able to use Slack before, during, and after the event to participate in social events and network with other participants.
Q: What do I need in order to attend the virtual event?
To participate in interactive live courses and exercises with other course participants, you will need:
- stable high-speed internet connection, to stream audio and video to your computer
- speakers, a microphone, and a webcam (strongly recommended)
- a computer that does not have a strict firewall that blocks collaboration tools such as Google Docs
- Zoom's meeting software (which is free to download and install), or Chrome browser
Q:What is the start and end time for class sessions?
The class sessions start at 8:00am US PST and end at 12:30pm US PST. Look up the times in your time zone. There are 5 sessions over 5 consecutive days. You must attend all 5 sessions in order to be eligible to take the UX Certification exam.
Q: Will the virtual courses be recorded?
No. These are live events that rely heavily on audience interaction and small-group activities in online breakout rooms. Thus, a recording would not have the same instructional value, thus we will not offer this.
Q: How do exams work for UX Certification?
You must sign in to each class session you attend. At the end of the course the last day, the online exam will be available for the course. You will be able to log in and take the exam. You can take your exams the same day, or any time within 35 calendar days after the course.
