Senior User Experience Specialist

Therese Fessenden is a Senior User Experience Specialist with Nielsen Norman Group, host of the NN/g UX Podcast, and manager of the 1-Hour Talk program. Her research focuses on understanding human behaviors, attitudes, and expectations in order to better orchestrate system and service design strategies.

Prior to joining NN/g, Therese was a user experience consultant at Microsoft, designing and auditing the user experience of intranets, Windows applications, and SharePoint sites for several Fortune 500 corporations. She also spent some time at Booz Allen Hamilton, assisting with instructional and interface design for a number of cybersecurity training initiatives. While pursuing her graduate degree, she worked as a freelance web designer, focusing on responsive web design for small- to medium-sized businesses.

When she is not in the office, she spends some of her time as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, mentoring and providing leadership training to future Army officers in college ROTC programs. Her varied experience with a range of industries and types of clients lends to a unique perspective of how user experience research can better inform design and business decisions in many contexts.

She has a BS from Cornell University in Information Science, specializing in human-centered and social systems, and an MBA from the University of Hawaii, focusing on marketing and I.T. management. She currently resides in the Ithaca, New York area.
