How to pick the best UX research method for each stage in the development process

There is a vast array of user research methods to choose from, but which method is right for which situation?  Many companies are familiar with usability studies, but how are they best complemented with surveys, ethnographic field studies, A/B testing, interviews, or other methods?  More importantly, which methods will get the most valuable insights at your company?

Today, companies are asking user experience professionals to use design and research at different phases of the development process and answer different types of questions. Given these increased demands, simply responding with “test it in the usability lab” is no longer enough.
